Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. While she was a small girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford's love for acting grew in her early years. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place suitable for her. Ford made an application for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time she already had made her debut on television in a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Alongside her usual performances in the theatre, Tate also joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
